Factors Influencing Intake of Calcium-Rich Foods Among Adolescents

Objectives:
1. To develop a calcium food frequency tool that measures intake among Asian, Caucasian and Hispanic adolescents.

2. To identify adolescent motivators and barriers to consumption of calcium-rich foods.

3. To identify variation in motivators, barriers and calcium intake by age, ethnicity and gender.

Methods:
Survey of adolescent motivators, barriers and calcium intake in 10 states, 3 ethnic groups and 2 age groups using calcium food frequency tool and survey derived from focus groups.

Outcomes:
1. Published manuscripts and theses on the validity of food frequency tool, motivators and barriers to consumption of calcium-rich foods and variation in motivators, barriers and calcium intake by age, ethnicity and gender.

2. This research will provide the content to the CD Rom educational tool that will be developed and tested in the IFAFS Bone Health Grant, “Improving bone health in adolescence through a targeted behavioral intervention”.

Impact:
The information will also provide the knowledge base and tools necessary to measure educational, medical and public health interventions to increase bone mass in adolescence to prevent osteoporosis in later years.
